The candlelight Christmas Eve service has just ended. The last Christmas hymn has been sung. The children with their sleepy eyes and rosy cheeks slowly move out into the night with their families. The sounds of “Silent Night” continue to ring and float thorough everyone’s head. Snowflakes are lightly swirling and dancing through the crisp, cool night air - a prelude to the dance of the sugarplums. As the congregation moves out into the moonlit night the church bells ring, announcing their departure and the arrival of the holidays…..
Legend has it that the moment when Christ was born the jingle of bells was heard throughout the earth. The marking of a miracle. A time for celebration. A new beginning.
Before clocks, bells were used in every village to ring in and out the passage of time, marking and heralding events, whether of legendary historical proportions or the simple passing of an hour, the start of a church service, or the beginning of a marriage. All are celebrations. The blessing of hearing the ringing, jingle, tingle of the bells.
